With cyber-bullying being the new form of attack against students in schools across the nation, causing fights, school shootings, and suicides; Knoxville students are taking initiatives in order to prevent deaths among their peers.

Counties and school boards across America tend to wait until there has been a school shooting or suicide due to bullying, in order to raise awareness to the issue of bullying; but not Knoxville school students.

The Knoxville Police Department has posted numerous billboards that raise awareness to the issue of bullying, catching the attention of junior-level students at Hardin Valley Academy.

Earlier this year, Hardin Valley students worked side-by-side with Knoxville police in order to create nine videos that take a stand against bullying.

Madalyn Neal, a junior at Hardin Valley says that, “We found that people had started programs after people had committed suicide and we kind of wanted to be a preventative measure here so that nothing like that would happen at Hardin Valley and to go on further and not happen in Knox County, as well.”

Other junior-level students at Hardin Valley say that their videos should address all kinds of bullying that they know take place locally and nation-wide; hoping that their videos can help end bullying and possibly save a life.

It is not easy to be the new student in school, so if you and your family are moving to Knoxville, check out Hardin Valley Academy and join the school’s efforts to end bullying.

Regional Director of the National Park Service Stan Austin named Memphis native Cassius Cash the new superintendent of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park last week.

In February, 2015, Cash will be taking charge of an important role for the Smoky Mountains. Currently, 97 percent of Smoky Mountain visitors are white, two percent are American Indian, two percent are Hispanic or Latino, one percent are Asian, and one percent are black. Since Cash is African American, he aims to increase the amount of minorities visiting the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Cash and the National Park Service are working together to come up with ways to attract more minorities to visit our nation’s environmental landmarks and treasures.

Cash explained in a local news release that, “I look forward to working with local communities, friends groups, and tribal communities on how the National Park Service can build on innovative ideas to create the next generation of stewards and supporters of this park. The timing for this is excellent because the Park Service will enter its second century of service to the nation when it celebrates its Centennial in 2016.”

Having such an important role and representing a stepping stone for Smoky Mountains’ officials, Cash is proof that although the nation’s view of minorities is changing, the percentage of minorities represented in the visitor data shows an area for the NPS to improve upon.

Knoxville moving companies welcome everyone to our great city and hope that all visitors and new residents make it to the Great Smoky Mountains, not only to cherish one of our nation’s greatest landmarks, but also to help diversify Tennessee.

Consumer products have been known to cause accidental deaths across the United States, from carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that you cannot see, smell, or hear where it is coming from. Around 150 people will die from nonfire-related carbon monoxide poisoning each year. It is important that you make sure that all fuel-burning products in your home are burning properly. If you are unsure what items in your home are fuel-burning, anything that uses gasoline, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, methane, or wood can create carbon monoxide gas.

During the winter months, the Consumer Product Safety Commission likes to remind Tennesseans of the many ways that carbon monoxide poisoning can occur. If you are moving to Knoxville, local moving companies would like to share with you and your family, things to watch out for this winter, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

1) Faulty fuel-burning products

2) Improper use of fuel-burning products

3) Improperly ventilated fuel-burning products

Items that you have checked to make sure that they are ventilating properly throughout winter are:

1) Furnaces

2) Stoves

3) Water heaters

4) Fireplaces

Perhaps the most important items that should be ventilating properly are your furnace or fireplace, since these tend to be used more frequently during winter months.

By the end of the month, the University of Tennessee will be launching a crowdfunding site in order to raise money for a handful of student projects.

The site: VOLstarter.utk.edu, will help to raise money for three current student initiatives. The three current student projects are:

1) $3,000 for architecture students to build wheelchairs ramps, decks, and other needs for disabled residents who do not have the funds themselves, and are having trouble getting into their own homes.

2) $800 to female engineering students so that they can produce a commercial that will entice more women to become engineers.

3) $2,500 to five art graduate students who are looking to travel to New York City, where their artwork is to be presented in the Chelsea Art Gallery District.

“This is a way, with smaller goal amounts, for donors to see their $5, $10, $20 gifts make a difference and see the outcome of that difference,” said Haylee Marshall, senior director of annual giving. “We have been wanting to communicate to alumni that every dollar really does make a difference for the university.”

The new idea of crowdfunding has allowed anyone online to be able to help support budding careers and even fund medical bills. UT sees it as a way to reach out to current students and alumni, so that anyone who has even just a couple extra dollars, can help show support for their school and UT students.

In order to have their initiatives posted on the site as crowdfunding projects, students must submit an application, complete with faculty recommendations and a budget breakdown on how the money will be spent.

If you are moving to Knoxville for college and will be attending UT, rest assured that you will be attending one of the nation’s finest universities that cares about what its students want.

When it comes time to move to a new location, most people have to decide between moving themselves or hiring a professional moving company. This decision can be difficult and often comes down to time and budget constraints. However, what people may not realize is how affordable hiring Knoxville movers can be and the many benefits that can accompany the decision to turn the work over to professional movers.

Here are the top three reasons to hire movers for your Knoxville move.

1- Save Time: Moving yourself can be time consuming and labor intensive. Doing the work yourself can require days and weeks of packing, cleaning, hauling, and organizing. On the other hand, when you hire Knoxville movers, you can have your entire home packed up and moved quickly and efficiently.

2- Save Money: Most people that choose to move themselves, make the decision in order to save money. What they may not be taking into consideration is all of the hidden costs that are a part of moving yourself. Instead of simply assuming that doing the work yourself will save money, it may be beneficial to take a clear look at additional costs such as time off of work, truck and equipment rentals, gas, and damages to property and belongings. Not to mention, having to pay someone to watch the kids if you have young ones running around during the hazards of moving.

3- Protect Your Belongings: When moving, the last thing that you want to see is expensive pieces of furniture, electronic equipment, and other personal belongings getting damaged. You’re taking a real risk with these belongings when you move yourself. Knoxville movers are trained and have the tools necessary to protect the items that are the most important to you.

For many shoppers, Black Friday is now Black Thursday. However, not every store is honoring the change.

In fact, most people believe that Black Friday should remain Black Friday and that Thursday should be for family time only, and that store employees should not have to work on Thanksgiving.

If you are moving to Knoxville, here is a list of store openings for the upcoming holiday.

1) Macy’s – 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

2) Best Buy – 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

3) Walmart – 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

4) Toys R Us – 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

Opposition to the Black Thursday change have sparked dispute and has even lead to the creation of a Facebook group, “Boycott Black Thursday” which already has 50,000 members. The page aims to bring community awareness to retail stores, that residents and employees would rather spend time with their families than shop on the holiday.

Stores that have joined the movement and have announced that they will remain closed, as tradition, are:

1) American Girl

2) BJ’s

3) Burlington

4) Costco

5) Dillard’s

6) Marshalls

7) Homegoods

8) Nordstrom

9) Pier 1 Imports

10) T.J.Maxx

Among the major chains that have not yet released their holiday hours are: Target, JCPenney, and Kohl’s, but all were open on Thanksgiving Day last year.

Don’t just save your money this holiday season, save time and let All My Sons Moving & Storage of Knoxville assist you in your moving needs so that you can be settled in just in time for the new year!

If you are moving to Knoxville before November 6th and love furry creatures…check out the 2014 FangCon.

“Furries” is a subculture whose members assign anthropomorphic qualities to animals and then dress up as them. Originally founded by a group of Tennessee furries from the TNfurs.net forums, “Fang” stands for Furry Anthropomorphic Nashville Gathering.

This one of a kind event brings furry fans from all over. Attendees say that they typically relate or identify with the animal that they dress-up as. Not only does the convention help celebrate animals, a portion of proceeds go to raise awareness towards animals.

Featured activities at FangCon are a parade, charades, nightly dances, music show, informational sessions, art, and special guests. Helpful hint before attending FangCon: do not attend if you do not like to sing, as they explain everything in songs.

Although FangCon says that it is family friendly, activities at FangCon can often get rated higher than PG so it’s best to get a babysitter for this one.

For more information on FangCon you can visit their exclusive Wikipage at Wikifur.com, and for more Knoxville events check out your local movers blog.
