Black Thursday in Knoxville: A New Tradition?

For many shoppers, Black Friday is now Black Thursday. However, not every store is honoring the change.

In fact, most people believe that Black Friday should remain Black Friday and that Thursday should be for family time only, and that store employees should not have to work on Thanksgiving.

If you are moving to Knoxville, here is a list of store openings for the upcoming holiday.

1) Macy’s – 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

2) Best Buy – 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

3) Walmart – 6 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

4) Toys R Us – 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Day

Opposition to the Black Thursday change have sparked dispute and has even lead to the creation of a Facebook group, “Boycott Black Thursday” which already has 50,000 members. The page aims to bring community awareness to retail stores, that residents and employees would rather spend time with their families than shop on the holiday.

Stores that have joined the movement and have announced that they will remain closed, as tradition, are:

1) American Girl

2) BJ’s

3) Burlington

4) Costco

5) Dillard’s

6) Marshalls

7) Homegoods

8) Nordstrom

9) Pier 1 Imports

10) T.J.Maxx

Among the major chains that have not yet released their holiday hours are: Target, JCPenney, and Kohl’s, but all were open on Thanksgiving Day last year.
